Lombok Travel Indonesian Phrases Guide: The Language You Need for Indonesia's Undiscovered Gem

Lombok is Bali's quieter, rawer, more rugged neighbour โ€” separated by the Lombok Strait, distinct in character, and for many travellers, the more lasting love. Where Bali has been shaped by fifty years of mass tourism, Lombok is still largely itself: the volcanic peak of Rinjani dominating the northern skyline, the white sand Gili Islands floating offshore in impossible turquoise, the Sasak people's weaving villages and traditional bale houses tucked into hills and river valleys, the southern Kuta beaches that feel like how Bali must have felt in 1985.

The tourist infrastructure exists โ€” particularly around the Gili Islands and in southern Kuta โ€” but Lombok rewards independent exploration in a way that Bali, with its abundant English signage and tourist corridors, no longer does in quite the same way. Away from the main beach strips, English is less widespread. The Sasak language (the indigenous language of Lombok's majority ethnic group) is spoken alongside Bahasa Indonesia. And the warmth of the welcome โ€” genuine, unhurried, often curious about why you're here rather than in Bali โ€” is something visitors consistently describe as one of Lombok's defining gifts.

This guide gives you the Indonesian you need to navigate Lombok with confidence, respect, and the kind of connection that makes travel mean something.

Getting to and Around Lombok

By Air

Lombok International Airport (LOP) is located in the south of the island, near Praya. International connections arrive via Singapore and Kuala Lumpur; domestic connections from Bali (20-minute flight) are frequent.

Bagasi saya hilang โ€” Bah-gah-see sah-yah hee-lang
"My luggage is lost"

Di mana taksi resmi? โ€” Dee mah-nah tak-see res-mee?
"Where is the official taxi?"

Use official airport taxis to avoid overcharging. Negotiate a fixed price before departure.

By Fast Boat (from Bali)

Fast boats from Padang Bai (Bali) to the Gili Islands take around 1.5โ€“2 hours. From Bangsal pier on Lombok, local boats connect to each of the three Gilis.

Tiket perahu ke Gili Trawangan โ€” Tee-ket pe-ra-hoo ke Gee-lee Traw-ah-ngan
"A boat ticket to Gili Trawangan"

Jam berapa perahu berikutnya? โ€” Jam beh-rah-pah pe-rah-oo be-ree-koot-nyah?
"What time is the next boat?"

By Cidomo (Horse Cart)

The Gili Islands are famously vehicle-free. Transport is by cidomo โ€” small, brightly decorated horse-drawn carts. Agree on the price before you get in.

Berapa ke ๏ฝž? โ€” Beh-rah-pah ke [place]?
"How much to [destination]?"

Bisa ke sana? โ€” Bee-sah ke sah-nah?
"Can you go there?"

By Motorbike (Lombok main island)

Motorbike rental (sewa motor) is the best way to explore Lombok independently. Roads in the south and centre are generally good; northern roads to Senaru (Rinjani base) are rougher.

Sewa motor per hari berapa? โ€” Seh-wah mo-tor per hah-ree beh-rah-pah?
"How much to rent a motorbike per day?"

Ada helm-nya? โ€” Ah-dah helm-nyah?
"Does it have a helmet?"

Always insist on a helmet (helm). Indonesian law requires it; more importantly, Lombok's roads have serious curves and occasional hazards.

Navigating Key Destinations

Mount Rinjani (Gunung Rinjani)

Lombok's dominant volcano (3,726m) is one of Indonesia's most spectacular treks โ€” a 2โ€“4 day climb through rainforest and volcanic landscape to a summit with views across Bali and Sumbawa. This experience can be perfect preparation for more travel beyond Bali in Indonesia's other magnificent regions.

Saya mau mendaki Rinjani โ€” <
